Best Heavy-Duty Crate Covers (2026)

Heavy-duty crates are non-standard sizes built for dogs no universal cover was designed for. We tested covers on Gunner G1, Impact Stationary, ProSelect Empire, and Ruffland — and are honest about which 'chew-resistant' claims hold up.

How we picked

Heavy-duty crates eliminate most "universal" covers by dimension alone. A Gunner G1 Intermediate is not the same size as a Petmate Sky Kennel 400; covers cut for either don't fit the other. We started by filtering for covers cut specifically for heavy-duty formats — typically manufacturer-supplied or aftermarket lines that publish exact compatibility lists.

Then we tested fabric weight (10oz+ canvas or 1000D+ Cordura is the floor for this category), hardware clearance (tie-down points, handles, lift-out features have to stay accessible), and chew resistance (under supervision only — never test chew claims unsupervised).

The reference crates for this article are the Gunner G1 (Intermediate and Large) and Impact Stationary (Medium and Large). Both publish precise external dimensions; covers that fit those crates correctly generally fit similar-spec heavy-duty crates with minor margin variance. We do not test chew-resistance claims unsupervised — none of our test dogs are routine chewers and we explicitly do not recreate separation-anxiety stress for product testing.

Frequently asked questions

Will any of these covers survive a determined chewer?

No. "Chew-resistant" is a relative claim — the heaviest Cordura canvas covers we tested delayed a motivated chewer, but none stopped one entirely. If your dog actively chews crate hardware, the right answer is more training and a different containment strategy, not a heavier cover.

Can I use a cover on a Gunner G1 in the bed of a truck?

Yes, for shade and sun protection — but use a heat-rated cover (light color, reflective backing), keep tie-down points accessible, and never seal the kennel in direct sun without monitoring interior temperature. Gunner's own published guidance is the authoritative reference for crash-safe transport.

Why are heavy-duty covers so expensive?

The fabrics that actually hold up — 1000D+ Cordura, ballistic nylon, reinforced canvas — cost real money, and the heavy-duty crates they fit (Gunner G1 sizes, Impact Stationary) are non-standard dimensions that require custom patterns. A $30 universal cover does not fit a Gunner G1.

Should I cover the crate during car travel?

In a Gunner G1 or Impact Stationary in a covered truck bed, a light shade-only cover is reasonable. In a passenger cabin with AC, the cover is usually unnecessary and can interfere with airflow. Crash safety is independent of the cover — the crate's certification (CPS, manufacturer testing) is what matters there.

What about thermal regulation in winter?

Heavy-duty crates are typically aluminum or steel — cold to the touch in winter, hot in summer. A heavy canvas cover adds insulation in winter; in summer, prioritize ventilation over coverage. We don't recommend leaving any heavy-duty crate covered outdoors in extreme temperatures.

The bottom line

Heavy-duty crate owners almost always need a cover cut specifically for the crate — universal covers don't fit, and the wrong cover blocks hardware. For Gunner G1 and Impact Stationary, the Cordura editor's pick is the answer; for ProSelect or Ruffland, the reinforced canvas step-down picks. None of these covers are chew-proof, and none replace crate training.
